If you’re going to be working with a contractor to help you with a construction or renovation project, one of their main goals is going to be to get you what you want with the final product. However, if you aren’t able to effectively convey what you’re thinking or what you’re wanting with your contractor, there’s very little chance that they’re going to be able to give you what you want. Luckily, there are things that you can do that will help make this easier.
To help you see how this can be done, here are three tips for effectively sharing your vision with your contractor.
Try Using Visuals
For many people who don’t have a lot of experience with construction, it can be hard to know the lingo and to speak clearly and concisely about what it is that you’re looking for. So rather than trying to speak around what you want and hoping that you’ve been calling the right materials or techniques by the right names, it’s going to be much easier for you to just use visuals to help convey your ideas.
To do this, you can look for examples of the things that you’re wanting and show those pictures to your contractor. You can also try using other visual communication tools that will allow you to draw or map out exactly what you want so that your contractor can easily see what you’re talking about.
Provide All Possible Details
If you have a detailed idea about something in your head, it won’t do you any good to not share those details with your contractor. So when you have a clear vision of what you want and how you want the finished product to look for you, you need to share these details with your contractor.
As a good rule of thumb, it’s better to over-communicate than to under-communicate with a contractor. The less you leave up to chance and to their own discretion, the more closely your own vision for the project will be the one that takes precedence.
Check-In Regularly Along The Way
While you’ll likely have a lot of conversations about what you’re wanting your contractor to do for you when you’re first starting out on your project, you may find that these conversations happen less and less as the project advances. However, people can forget about your vision at these phases of development.
Knowing this, you should check-in regularly with your contractor to see what they’re working on and how closely they’re sticking to your vision. This way, you can have them make any necessary changes before things get too far down the road.
If you’re worried about how you’ll effectively be able to share your vision with your contractor, consider implementing some of the tips mentioned above to help you in doing this.
